Grok Bot 0.71.2 notes: 20 files per message, 1 GB videos, desktop alerts

The release notes, dated Oct 14, went up today. You can send a Bot up to 20 files at once and get its questions on the computer you're using.

The Grok Bot changelog now has notes for 0.71.2, and the biggest change for most people is attachments: up to 20 files in one message, single files up to 250 MB and videos up to 1 GB. The notes are dated Oct 14, but they only went up this afternoon; at 4:21 PM ET the changelog still ended at 0.70.2. So this is not a new release today: users were already reporting issues on 0.71.2 by Oct 16, and the notes now say what's in it. They also cover 0.71.0 and 0.71.1.

Eric Zakariasson, who works at SpaceXSI (his X bio reads "tinkering @spacexsi, prev @cursor_ai"), posted at 5:46 PM ET: "grok bot 0.71.2 is out".

What changed#

  • Bigger attachments. "One message can carry up to 20 attachments instead of 6," with a 200 MB total per message. Files can be up to 250 MB and videos up to 1 GB, and the Bot "says when a video is too large to watch."
  • Alerts follow you. "While you use Grok Bot on a Mac or Windows PC, Bot replies and questions notify you there instead of your phone."
  • Pre-filled forms. "Forms a Bot asks you to fill in can arrive with known fields filled in, and you can edit them before you submit."
  • Voice chats survive drops. If the connection drops, "the call reconnects and continues the same conversation instead of ending."
  • More plugin skills. "Bots can use up to 200 skills from your installed plugins instead of 24."

Why it matters#

With six files per message, a batch of contracts, call recordings or screenshots had to be split across several messages. Twenty files fit in one, as long as the total stays under 200 MB. The file-size and notification changes both say "Requires Grok Bot 0.70.2 or later," so check your desktop version.

How to use it#

  1. Check your version. From the help page: "open Settings, go to Updates, and choose Check for Updates. If an update is ready, choose Restart to Update."
  2. Drag your files into the message box, up to 20 at once.
  3. Work in the desktop app as usual. While you're using it, Bot replies and questions show up there instead of on your phone.

Prompt to try (ours, untested):

I'm attaching this week's client call notes and recordings. Read all of them, then give me one table of decisions, owners and due dates, and flag anything two files disagree on.

Good to know#

  • For admins. "Team admins can turn off Messaging between Bots under Bot capabilities on the dashboard." Enterprise admins can recreate, terminate, or delete members' computers from Manage Bot Computers or the Admin API.
  • Low disk. When a Bot's computer runs low on disk, the Bot "tells you once, names the biggest files, and deletes them only if you agree."
  • Plus aliases. Tagged addresses like name+shop@ are in this release too; we covered them Oct 14.
  • Phone app. The notes don't say whether the phone app gets the bigger limits. We haven't tested any of this.

What to watch#

Whether help pages pick up the new limits, and whether the phone app matches them.
