ChatGPT and Codex will share one usage allowance from December
On Plus, Pro and Business, ChatGPT and Codex will draw from one token-based allowance, and Instant chat will not draw from it.
If you pay for ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Business, starting in December your usage allowance "will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex," per OpenAI's help article. Usage "will be measured in tokens," "More advanced models and complex tasks generally use more of your allowance," and "Instant chat will not draw from your usage."
What changed#
Today, per OpenAI's Codex help page, "Codex, ChatGPT Work, ChatGPT for Excel, and Workspace Agents use a shared allowance and credit pool." Regular chat isn't on that list. An OpenAI email seen by BleepingComputer says "Your use of ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same allowance."
Why it matters#
OpenAI says: "We expect most users won't need to wait for their usage to reset more often than they do now." Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans "now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance," per the Oct 29 release notes. If you reach your limit, you "can wait for it to reset, upgrade your plan, or buy credits."
How to use it#
- Check your usage now: Settings > Usage in ChatGPT or Usage & Billing in the Codex app, per the credits article. In an active Codex CLI session, enter /status.
- To use a banked reset, per the resets article: on desktop "open Settings > Usage & billing," select the reset, review it and confirm. In Codex CLI, "enter /usage and select Redeem reset."
- From December, "You will be able to see your combined remaining usage and reset times in Settings → Usage."
Our read, for heavy Codex users: ask for a plan before big tasks (ours, untested):
Before you change anything, list the files you will read and the steps you will take, in under 10 lines. Wait for my OK.
Good to know#
- The article names only Plus, Pro and Business, gives no day in December and no token figures.
- To use a banked reset from Usage settings, "at least one allowance it covers must have less than 80% remaining." OpenAI hasn't said how resets apply to the combined allowance.
- "OpenAI Support does not reset ChatGPT or Codex usage limits."
What to watch#
