ChatGPT's iOS and Android apps now switch between two accounts

Keep a personal and a work ChatGPT account signed in on your phone; each keeps its own chats, memory and plan, and app store purchases stay with one account.

You can now keep two ChatGPT accounts signed in on your phone and move between them without signing out. In the iOS or Android app, go to Settings > Switch account.

What changed#

OpenAI's Oct 30 release note says: "Account switching is rolling out to the ChatGPT iOS and Android apps. You can stay signed in to up to 2 ChatGPT accounts at a time and switch between them without signing out." Before, the switcher was a web feature; the Help Center now lists web, iOS and Android, and "Only one account is active at a time." Tibo Sottiaux, who works on Codex and ChatGPT at OpenAI, posted at 1:42 AM ET Saturday that it's "coming soon to desktop too."

Why it matters#

Our read: one phone can now hold work and personal ChatGPT without mixing them. Switching does not "Share memory or conversation history" or "Combine billing or subscriptions," per the Help Center, and for a company-managed account, "Switching accounts does not change which policies apply." Claude's apps added the same ability Thursday.

How to use it#

  1. Open Settings in the ChatGPT app.
  2. Select Switch account, then Add account, and sign in. A new account "will start on the Free plan by default."
  3. To switch, open Settings > Switch account and pick the other account. "The checkmark identifies the active account."
  4. To remove one, open Settings > Switch account, tap the more options menu (•••) next to it, select Log out and confirm.

Good to know#

  • Two is the cap. With two signed in, "Add account is hidden" until you log out of one.
  • It's still rolling out: "If you don't see Switch account in Settings, it may not be available to you yet."
  • Plans don't follow you. Per OpenAI's subscription article, an Apple Account already used for a ChatGPT subscription "remains associated with the original ChatGPT account," and on Google Play "Canceling a subscription or waiting for it to expire may not remove the purchase restriction." OpenAI's fix: "sign in to the account you want to use at chatgpt.com" and buy there.
  • Paid but seeing Free? Don't buy again: "Purchasing another subscription may lead to duplicate charges."

What to watch#

Desktop has no date. Look for Switch account in the ChatGPT desktop app and for desktop in the Help Center's Availability section, which lists web, iOS and Android today.

Steps

  1. Per OpenAI's Help Center: open Settings in the ChatGPT iOS or Android app, select Switch account, select Add account, and sign in to the account you want to add.
  2. To switch, open Settings, select Switch account, and select the other account. The checkmark marks the active account.
  3. To log out of one account, open Settings, select Switch account, open the more options menu (•••) for that account, select Log out and confirm.
  4. Before buying a plan on mobile, check which account is active. If the app store blocks the purchase because it is tied to another ChatGPT account, buy on chatgpt.com while signed in to the account you want.
