Grok Bots can now read your X Chat messages and requests

Staff say Bots can now work through your X Chat inbox and message requests. Connect the X plugin and give your Bot clear rules before it touches anything.

You can now ask a Grok Bot to go through your X Chat messages and message requests: summarize what came in, tell you which requests matter, and help you answer. Paul Vann, a SpaceXSI staff member whose X bio reads "@spacexsi & @x api," posted at 10:39 AM ET on Oct 16 that Bot access to "your @chat messages and message requests to help manage busy inboxes" is "now live." He said his own Bot has been "reviewing new message requests all week, approving them, and helping me stay on top of my inbox."

What changed#

Until today, Bots could read public X without a connected account, and the X plugin added your DMs, bookmarks, timeline and likes, per the SpaceXSI docs. X Chat was not on that list, and a user's wish for a Bot that can message them in X Chat has been on our list since Oct 9. Now a Bot can open your X Chat inbox and your pending message requests.

One early user, Texas Twins Dad, listed summaries of all or unread chats, "the Priority and Hidden" message requests, replies he sends "only after I approve," and a daily routine "that pings me only when a real person writes." A Grok community moderator said you can check requests "on demand, or set up a daily check."

Why it matters#

Our read: message requests are where new contacts, collab offers and spam pile up unseen. A Bot that sorts them daily means real people get answered and you only read what passes your rules.

How to use it#

  1. In Grok Bot, open Connect apps, add the X plugin and sign in with X (docs).
  2. Our read: expect a request for your X Chat PIN. X's open source helper for Grok Bot decrypts messages locally with it and says "Never echo it into logs or chat," so enter it only in a secure form, never in the chat box.
  3. If the Bot says it can't reach your messages, reconnect the X plugin. The helper needs the "dm.read / dm.write" permissions on your X connection (our read: an older connection may not have them).
  4. Give your Bot rules before it reads anything.

Prompt (ours):

Go through my X Chat message requests (Priority and Hidden). For each, give me the sender, one line on what they want, and a verdict: real person, sales pitch, or spam. Don't accept any request or send any reply. List the top 3 I should answer today.

Good to know#

  • Saved key. The helper can save your unlocked chat key so you skip the PIN next time, and its README warns: "Anyone with access to this computer account could then read your X Chats." All your Bots share one computer, so say no unless you trust every Bot on it.
  • Accepting is not replying. Tell the Bot plainly whether it may accept requests, reply, both, or neither.
  • Not tested by us. We could not try it from our account today. The Grok Bot changelog (still v0.70.2) and docs don't mention X Chat yet.

What to watch#

Setup may get simpler. At 1:22 PM ET, Elon Musk replied "We do need to make this easier" under a user who had just tried it and wants private communities in X Chat. Vann asked users to keep telling him how to make the X integration "even better." Watch for a changelog line and a docs section.
