Cursor 3.28 on Windows breaks agent chat; staff say a fix is coming

If Cursor's agent chat on Windows answers every prompt with "An unexpected error occurred," you can get working again now: chat in the classic IDE window, or reinstall 3.27 and turn off auto-update. Cursor staff say this is a 3.28 bug and a fix is on the way.

What changed#

The main thread opened Oct 28 at 4:34 PM ET. At 4:58 AM ET today, Colin from Cursor replied: "This is an issue we’re aware of affecting Windows users on 3.28. We’ve identified a fix and will roll it out soon."

At 9:58 AM ET, staffer mohitjain called it "an issue we’re tracking with Cursor 3.28 on Windows, not something in your setup."

By 10:11 AM ET, mohitjain said two more Windows problems on 3.28 are tracked and that 3.27 clears them. In the Library view, the Project and User folders fail to load, an issue "we’re tracking on Windows" ("your files are safe"). Settings search hangs on "Loading settings…", and the staff reply called it "likely the same Windows issue as your Library report."

Why it matters#

On affected Windows machines, local agent chat fails on every prompt. One user's report rates it "Yes - Cursor is unusable." Mac and Linux are not named in any staff reply.

How to use it#

1. Check Help > About for your version.
2. On 3.28, press Ctrl+Shift+N (or File > Open IDE) and use the Agent chat in that window.
3. If that fails, close Cursor fully and install 3.27 from cursor.com/download.
4. On 3.27, stop it updating back: open Settings (Ctrl+Shift+,), search update mode, and set Update: Mode to none, or add "update.mode": "none" to settings.json. Staff gave these steps for Windows user installs in May.
5. When the main thread reports the fix, turn updates back on and update.

Good to know#

• One user says 3.27.22 worked, "but once it auto updates, the issue returns." (reported)
• Another user reports the error with HTTP/2 already disabled, and says the IDE window's Agent chat works. (reported)
• The IDE window may not help everyone: one user on the IDE layout reports local agents failing while cloud agents work. (reported)
• Staff have not said what causes it or when the fix ships.

A 3.28 patch or changelog entry, and a staff "fixed" post in the main thread.
