Skills missing from Bots added from a template
Recreate each skill on the new Bot by hand, because a Bot added from a template arrives without the skills its preview shows.
Update, Oct 12: At 6:12 AM ET, mohitjain said this is "still an issue we're tracking," and that the team has the asks for a regression check, "a note at import showing what came across," and "a copy button in the preview." "No timeline yet."
Update, Oct 9: At 6:28 AM ET, staff said this is "still an issue we're tracking" and that the copy-paste workaround "doesn't work, since the preview text can't be selected." Staff now suggest screenshots instead. The steps below are updated.
- Status: Open. Staff confirmed it on Aug 31, again on Oct 9, and again on Oct 12. No release note mentions a fix.
- First seen: Aug 29, in a forum report on Grok Bot 0.30.0 for Windows.
- Symptoms: The template preview lists a skill with its full text, but the Bot you add from that template has no skills. Its instructions, memories, routines, and plugin references do arrive.
- Workaround: Screenshot each skill in the template preview, send the screenshots to the new Bot, and ask it to create the skill.
Templates arrived in Grok Bot 0.30.0 on Aug 28, letting you share a Bot so others can add their own copy. The reporter found that skills never come across, whether the template is someone else's or a round trip of their own. The skill isn't in the new Bot's settings, on its computer, or in the / menu.
Staff member mohitjain confirmed it on Aug 31. "The preview reads the skills correctly, but they aren't being applied to the imported bot," he wrote, adding that it's "not intended behavior."
Why it matters#
Skills often carry the instructions that make a shared Bot useful. Without them, a Bot from a template can look complete and still behave like a blank one.
How to use it#
Staff gave this workaround on Oct 9.
- Open the template preview and find the skill.
- Take screenshots of it, scrolling through longer skills.
- Send the screenshots to the new Bot and ask it to "create a skill with exactly that content," as staff put it.
- Read the result. Staff said to give it "a quick read afterward since it's working from images."
- Check that it saved. Press Cmd+Shift+M (Ctrl+Shift+M on Windows) and look under Private skills, as in our skills on desktop tip.
These screenshots show a skill called "Weekly report" from a template. Create a skill with exactly that content, then show me the full text so I can check it.
Good to know#
- The earlier copy-paste workaround fails because the preview's text can't be selected. Staff confirmed that on Oct 9.
- The reporter also said routines from a template arrive paused.
- If you publish templates, tell people which skills to add by hand until this is fixed.
