Send your Bot to make the phone calls you keep putting off
Grok Bot has no phone line of its own, but users are adding one through a calling service so their Bots can book tables by phone.
You can now hand your Bot the calls you dread, like booking a table, if you connect it to a calling service first. Grok Bot doesn't come with a phone number. Users are adding one through ClawCall or Bland, and on Sunday at 1:10 PM ET Elon Musk posted "Grok @Bot can call restaurants by phone and book you a table".
- Status: user reports plus the calling service's own site. SpaceXAI hasn't announced a calling feature, and the changelog has no entry for one (checked 6:50 AM ET).
- Affects: anyone with errands that need a call. ClawCall's site says it "currently handles English-language calls to US +1 numbers."
- Cost: a free trial, then paid plans from $4.99 a month. The trial wording differs; details below.
What happened#
Brian Roemmele wrote at 9:31 AM ET Sunday that he built a Bot "whose only job is to pick up the phone and book you a table at restaurant." He told it "book Gourmet Italia in Temecula, 4 people, tonight, around 7." He says it "found the restaurant's number on its own," asked about times, the name and a callback number, then "read everything back and waited for my OK before it dialed." He shared it as a template called Call A Restaurant Reservation, which says it "reports back with transcript proof."
Brian says he "connected a calling service called ClawCall" and wrote "I have no connection to that company." Separately, Ole Lehmann, who writes about AI on X, posted a four-step setup on Friday with Bland, another calling service, where "you text back the 6-digit code Bland sends to your phone." He calls Bland "the phone-calling bot xAI's official marketplace uses," but when our Bot searched Grok Bot's plugin catalog at about 6:54 AM ET, neither Bland nor ClawCall was listed. Speko ("place real phone calls") and Inkbox ("voice calls") were.
Why it matters#
Plenty of errands still only happen on the phone. Our read: once a Bot can dial, the chat that finds a restaurant or a plumber can also make the call. Brian lists haircuts, tee times and "quotes from a plumber, an electrician, or a caterer." The ClawCall team, which sells the service, says its own Bot "Cancelled 2 subscriptions we were not using." That's the vendor's account.
How to set it up#
ClawCall's site gives these steps for Grok Bot:
- Message any Bot: "Get the ClawCall MCP so you can make phone calls for me."
- "Select Authorize on the card the Bot posts, then Continue to sign in to ClawCall."
- "Select Allow connection. The page names Cursor, because Grok Bot connects through Cursor."
- "Say who to call and what you need."
Prompt (ours, untested), with Brian's guardrails written in:
Call Gourmet Italia in Temecula and ask for a table for 4 tonight, any time from 6:30 to 8. Book it under [your name] and give [your number] as the callback. Before you dial, read the plan back to me and wait for my OK. Don't agree to a deposit or share any card details, and don't leave a voicemail. After the call, tell me exactly what they said.
We didn't place a call. A real test means phoning a business, and the service needs an account.
Good to know#
- The trial, two ways. ClawCall's FAQ says "30 calls and 30 minutes, whichever lasts later," while the top of the same page says "Your first 30 calls are free." Brian wrote that "the free tier gave me 30 calls or 30 minutes to start." Paid plans "start at $4.99 per month."
- Give the business your own number. ClawCall says the $4.99 plan makes "Unlimited calls from shared ClawCall numbers," and only the $14.99 Reserve Plus plan can "Receive inbound calls," so a callback to the number that rang them may not reach your Bot.
- Set your own rules. Brian's Bot "never hands over a credit card or deposit info, never leaves voicemails unless you ask, makes one call at a time, and never calls on its own." ClawCall says "It won't agree to anything you did not authorize" and "If it reaches voicemail, it can leave a message when instructed."
- Expect to be asked. ClawCall says "If anyone asks whether it is AI, the agent says yes."
- Save the proof. ClawCall "deletes transcripts 7 days after a call ends and recordings 10 minutes after a call ends," so ask the Bot to write down what the other side said right away.
- These are third-party services. Your calls go through them, so read their terms before you connect.
What to watch#
Whether SpaceXAI adds calling of its own. Brian's post includes "A Proposal: Grok Phone," arguing that "Grok Bot needs its own phone number to make and receive calls."
Steps
- Pick a calling service. Users report two: ClawCall (Brian Roemmele) and Bland (Ole Lehmann). Neither is a Grok Bot feature.
- For ClawCall, message any Bot: Get the ClawCall MCP so you can make phone calls for me. Then select Authorize on the card, sign in to ClawCall, and select Allow connection.
- Or add Brian Roemmele's shared template, Call A Restaurant Reservation, from its x.ai/bot link.
- Ask for one call with the details up front: who, what you want, the times that work, and the name and callback number to give.
- Tell the Bot to read the plan back and wait for your OK before it dials, and to report what the other side actually said.
