Local execution fails on Ubuntu 22.04 and Pop!_OS 22.04

Staff say the Linux build needs a newer C++ runtime than those systems ship. Chat and the cloud computer still work.

  • Status: Open. Staff confirmed it at 3:29 AM ET on Oct 12 and said updating Grok Bot "doesn't help for now." No fix date.
  • First seen: A forum report posted at 11:00 PM ET on Oct 11 about Grok Bot 0.68.1 on Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS.
  • Symptoms: Local execution never starts. Logs show ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED because tree_sitter_runtime_binding.node needs GLIBCXX_3.4.31 and CXXABI_1.3.15, which Ubuntu 22.04-based libstdc++ does not provide.
  • Workaround: Run local commands from Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, or from another OS on the same account. Do not replace system libstdc++.

Grok Bot's Linux desktop build can fail to load its local-execution module on Ubuntu 22.04 and Pop!_OS 22.04. "The current Linux build of Grok Bot pulls in a native module built against a newer C++ runtime than what's available on Ubuntu 22.04-based systems," staff member deanrie said. "Chat and cloud computer aren't affected."

Why it matters#

If your only always-on machine is Ubuntu 22.04, a Bot cannot run shell commands there even when the app is open. The cloud computer path still works.

How to use it#

  1. Prefer the Bot's cloud computer for jobs that do not need files or apps on that Linux box.
  2. Or install Grok Bot on Ubuntu 24.04 or newer (or macOS/Windows) logged into the same account, and point local work there.
  3. Do not replace system libstdc++ or pull experimental PPAs. deanrie said that "can break other things on some systems."

Good to know#

  • The reporter used the official DEB package. Staff said a newer Grok Bot version does not fix this yet, so 0.70.2 is not a workaround for this bug.
  • Staff will post in the thread when there is an update.
