Copy on iOS garbles Chinese and other non-English text
Until the next iPhone update, use Select Text and the small iOS Copy menu instead of the app's Copy button.
- Status: Open. Staff confirmed it at 3:14 AM ET on Oct 11 and said "A fix is ready and will be included in one of the next app updates." No date.
- First seen: A forum report posted at 9:53 PM ET on Oct 10, on the App Store version installed that day.
- Symptoms: Copying a Bot message with Chinese text in the Grok Bot iPhone app pastes as accented Latin characters. The user's example: 「国际 AI 动态简报」 pasted as 国际 AI 动æ€ç®€æŠ¥. English text survives.
- Workaround: Select the text yourself and use the iOS system Copy.
Grok Bot for iOS corrupts non-English text when you copy a message. "This is a known issue with the Copy action in the current version of Grok Bot for iOS," staff member deanrie said. The fix should cover "Chinese and any other non-English text."
The user who reported it found it happens with both formatted and plain-text messages, and that copying Chinese from other apps on the same iPhone works.
Why it matters#
If you pass Bot output to people in another language, a pasted reply can be unreadable. The reporter said it blocks sharing with people on WeChat, their main use.
How to use it#
Staff's workaround:
- Long-press the message and choose Select Text.
- Drag the handles, or use Select All.
- Tap Copy in the small iOS menu just above the selection.
- Paste into Notes, WeChat or anywhere else.
Good to know#
- Don't use the Copy button at the top of the screen. Staff said "It gives the same broken result."
- If text still pastes broken, staff asked for the version from Grok Bot Settings > About.
- The bug is in the app's Copy, not the app you paste into. The reporter saw it in Apple Notes too.
- We couldn't test it: we don't run the iPhone app.
