Gmail connector still turns your email links into Google redirects

Staff say a fix is in the works but not live yet, and it hits every platform. Add links in Gmail yourself until then.

If your Bot writes or sends email through the Gmail connector, every link in it can arrive as a Google redirect instead of the address you meant. Until Cursor ships its fix, let the Bot write the draft, then add or re-paste the links yourself in Gmail before you send. At 12:18 PM ET on Oct 16, Cursor staff member Colin said the team "has been working on a change that writes these emails so links are kept exactly as you typed them," but it "isn't available to your accounts yet."

What changed#

The bug is not new. Wes_Anderson reported on Sep 29 that links sent through the connector come out wrapped as google.com/url redirects, in both the visible text and the link target, whether the body is plain text or HTML. Colin confirmed the same day that it is a known issue in the Gmail connection itself. What's new today: Colin said it "isn't Windows-specific" and happens "on every platform, in Grok Bot and in Cursor's Agents window alike," and that a fix is being built.

Why it matters#

Per the original report, customers who get a redirect link can hit Google's leaving-this-site warning or save the wrong address. Our read: anyone using a Bot for support replies, sign-up letters or outreach may be sending these without knowing it. Emails you write yourself in Gmail are not affected.

How to use it#

  1. Tell your Bot to save link emails as drafts, not send them. Colin advised against having the Bot send link emails directly with send_message for now.
  2. Open the draft in Gmail and add or re-paste each link by hand.
  3. Send from Gmail.

Prompt (ours) for your Bot:

For any email you write me that contains a link, save it as a Gmail draft and do not send it. Put the links at the bottom of your chat reply as plain text so I can paste them into the draft myself.

Good to know#

  • A forum user shared a workaround that sends mail through a Google app password instead of the connector. Colin cautioned that Grok Bot computers "can only make outbound HTTPS connections, so mail connections over IMAP and SMTP may time out," that an app password "gives full access to your mailbox," and that "some Google Workspace admins also turn app passwords off." Colin also said to "revoke it once this is resolved."
  • We have not reproduced the redirect from our own account; the details come from the forum thread checked at 12:21 PM ET.

What to watch#

Colin said staff will post in the thread when the fix reaches accounts. We will update this entry when it does.
