Cursor 3.24 chats fail with Connection failed when no folder is open

Staff say the error is not a network problem: chat crashes before sending when the window has no project folder, and opening a folder directly fixes it.

If every chat in Cursor says "Connection failed. Please try again" after the 3.24 update, open a project folder with File > Open Folder... and try a new chat. Staff member deanrie said at 4:25 AM ET on Oct 14 that "this is a known issue we're tracking" and that "it isn't a network issue, so switching HTTP versions wouldn't help." The chat "crashes inside Cursor before the request is even sent, when the window has no project folder attached."

  • Status: Open. Staff are tracking it, with no fix date.
  • Affects: Cursor IDE windows, or restored saved workspaces, that have no folder inside. The report came from 3.24.18 on Windows 10.
  • Symptoms: Every chat and every model fails with "Connection failed." The request details show "No resource accessor found for composer." Network diagnostics can still pass.
  • Workaround: Open a project folder directly, not a saved workspace or a Recent item.

What changed#

Louis2 reported at 9:14 PM ET on Oct 13 that after updating to Cursor 3.24.18 on Windows 10, "none of my existing chats nor new chats work with any model." The theme had also reset from dark to light. Switching from HTTP/2 to HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/1.0 made network diagnostics pass but did not fix chat, and a restart did not help.

deanrie said the cause is a window or saved workspace that "was restored without any folders inside," and that "a profile reset during the 3.24 install could've caused that, which also matches the theme reset you noticed."

Why it matters#

The error text points at your network, so the natural move is to change proxies, HTTP versions or firewall rules. Staff say none of that helps here. The fix takes under a minute once you know the window needs a folder.

How to use it#

  1. If you switched Cursor to HTTP/1.1 or HTTP/1.0 while troubleshooting, you can set it back to HTTP/2 in the same network setting. deanrie said "you can safely switch back."
  2. In the editor window, open File > Open Folder... and pick one of your project folders directly. Don't use a saved workspace or an entry from Recent.
  3. When the folder shows in Explorer, open a new chat and send a short message.

If the Agents window still crashes on Windows:

  1. Fully close Cursor, including from the system tray.
  2. Press Win+R, enter %APPDATA%\Cursor, and press Enter.
  3. Rename the Workspaces folder to Workspaces.bak.
  4. Start Cursor, open your project with File > Open Folder..., then try a new chat.

Good to know#

  • Renaming Workspaces to Workspaces.bak keeps the old folder, so you can rename it back. Staff did not say what else that folder holds, so rename it rather than deleting it.
  • deanrie asked whether Explorer showed "NO FOLDER OPENED" before the fix. If yours did, that is a strong sign you hit this bug.
  • The Windows path is the only one staff gave. We have not seen a Mac or Linux report of this error yet, and we have not reproduced it.

What to watch#

A Cursor release note that fixes chat in folderless windows, and whether more 3.24 users report the theme or profile reset.
