Claude Code desktop rebuilt for running many sessions at once

If you run several Claude Code jobs side by side, update the desktop app: nested sessions, saved environments, and a sidebar that shows which session needs you.

If you juggle several Claude Code jobs at once, update the Claude desktop app and start a new session. Anthropic says the Code tab is now "much quicker to start sessions, easier to split work across a few, and you can always see what each of them is doing."

What changed#

Anthropic posted the update from @ClaudeDevs at 3:01 PM ET on Oct 14. The desktop app already ran parallel sessions; the update makes them faster to start and easier to track. What's new:

  • The new session screen keeps recent folders one click away, and you can save a setup (a few folders, an SSH host, or the cloud) as an environment, with the option of a worktree per folder.
  • Ask Claude to run tasks in parallel and it starts a nested session for each one. Each reports back into your main session when it's done.
  • Claude suggests follow-up work while it runs, and one click starts it as its own session. /btw opens a side question in its own tab.
  • The sidebar shows which sessions are working and which need you. Inside a session, a live to-do list tracks Claude's plan, a recap card sums up the turn when Claude needs you, and a side rail shows where it runs, its context and its changes.

Why it matters#

Running many agents is only useful if you can tell which one is waiting on you. The sidebar status and recap card target exactly that, and nested sessions keep the main thread readable.

How to use it#

  1. Update the Claude desktop app and open the Code tab.
  2. Save an environment for a project you return to, and turn on a worktree per folder so sessions don't edit the same files.
  3. Press Cmd+N (Ctrl+N on Windows) for another session; Cmd-click (Ctrl-click) a second session to view two side by side.
Split this into three independent tasks and run them in parallel: fix the failing tests in /api, update the README setup steps, and find unused dependencies. Report each result back here when it's done.

Good to know#

  • Side chats aren't saved to disk, so you can't reopen one after you quit the app.
  • When Claude checks on your other sessions, it sees only local, SSH and WSL sessions in the desktop app, not cloud sessions or terminal CLI sessions.
  • Cloud sessions count toward your plan limits, with no separate compute charge.
  • Worktrees live in <project-root>/.claude/worktrees/ by default.
  • As of 3:55 PM ET, Anthropic's desktop docs did not yet describe nested sessions, the recap card or saved multi-folder environments. Watch for those pages.
