Codex CLI 0.164 saves prompts in ten numbered preset slots

Update Codex CLI to save your most-used prompts and settings as presets you can run with one key, and set model or permissions in one typed line.

If you paste the same review or planning prompt into Codex CLI every day, update to 0.164.0 and save it once. The first new feature in the release notes (12:48 AM ET Friday) reads: "Save reusable prompts and slash commands in ten numbered /presets slots, with a keyboard menu for quick access."

What changed#

Before this release there was no /presets command; the release notes list it as new. Now, per PR 54381, you press a key from 0 to 9 "to run a saved preset or create one in an empty slot." A preset can start from composer text or from your current "model, reasoning effort, and speed settings," and presets persist "under tui.presets in the active user configuration," per PR 54380.

Two commands now take arguments. /model accepts /model [model] --reasoning <level> --speed <tier> "without changing saved defaults." /permissions takes a profile, "for example /permissions :read-only."

Why it matters#

Our read: presets turn your best prompts into one-key habits, and inline /permissions makes it quick to drop to read-only before you let Codex look around a repo you don't know.

How to use it#

  1. Update with npm install -g @openai/codex, or brew upgrade --cask codex, per OpenAI's docs.
  2. Type /presets. Press n to create, s to start from current settings, e to edit, d to delete.
  3. Press a slot number to run it.

A preset to start with (ours, untested):

Review the current diff for regressions. For each finding, name the file and line, explain how it fails, and suggest the smallest fix. Do not edit files.

Good to know#

  • Running a preset submits it. Per PR 54380, saved inputs go "through the normal queued submission path while preserving the composer draft."
  • OpenAI's slash command docs didn't list /presets as of 6:15 AM ET Friday.
  • The release also masks "credentials during supported remote Bash commands and Zsh snapshot sessions." It says "The Amazon Bedrock setup wizard is now enabled by default," and PR 56033 scopes that to "eligible onboarding." Turn it off with features.bedrock_setup_wizard = false.
  • Watch next: /presets showing up in OpenAI's docs or the desktop app.

Steps

  1. Update the CLI with npm install -g @openai/codex, or brew upgrade --cask codex if you installed it with Homebrew, per OpenAI's docs.
  2. Type /presets to open the preset menu above the composer.
  3. Press n to create a preset, or s to start one from your current model, reasoning effort and speed, per the pull request.
  4. Press a number from 0 to 9 to run a saved preset; e edits and d deletes.
  5. Set a session's model inline with /model [model] --reasoning <level> --speed <tier>; saved defaults don't change, per the pull request.
  6. Switch permission profiles inline, for example /permissions :read-only.
