U.S. university labs can apply for up to 30 free Business seats and GPT-Rosalind
Eligible academic labs at U.S. universities can apply for up to a year of sponsored ChatGPT Business Standard seats, with GPT-Rosalind after trusted-access approval.
If you lead a life-sciences lab at a U.S. university, you can now apply for the Rosalind Academic Plan: up to 30 ChatGPT Business Standard seats at $0 per user per month for up to 12 months, plus GPT-Rosalind after trusted-access approval. Applications opened Oct 15. A university email alone does not guarantee approval, and the offer does not include API credits.
What changed#
OpenAI posted the plan on Oct 15. The company account @OpenAI said at 5:15 PM ET: "We're expanding access to GPT-Rosalind for academic research" and pointed to sponsored access "for eligible labs at U.S. universities." ChatGPT release notes add that "Applications are now open to labs at U.S. universities" and that "Applying doesn't give your lab immediate access."
Eligible labs receive, per the announcement and help center:
- Up to 30 Business Standard seats at $0 per user per month for up to 12 months.
- ChatGPT and Codex on those Standard seats, "subject to their usage limits."
- GPT-Rosalind "following trusted-access approval and activation for eligible members, subject to applicable usage limits."
- Access to "all commercially available frontier OpenAI models, subject to plan usage limits."
OpenAI also says: "Research data shared through the Rosalind Academic Plan is not used to train our models by default."
Before vs after (our read). Before this offer, a lab wanting a shared Business workspace paid for its seats. After approval and setup, the plan sponsors up to 30 Standard seats for up to a year and ties GPT-Rosalind activation to that same lab workspace. It is separate from ChatGPT for Academic Researchers.
Why it matters#
OpenAI calls GPT-Rosalind "our dedicated life sciences model," combined with Rosalind workbench for "specialized tool orchestration across medicinal chemistry, genomics, wet-lab assistance, and other scientific applications." Our read: for a PI or research ops lead, the practical change is cost and seat count: up to 30 named members in one managed Business workspace without monthly seat charges during the complimentary period. That is useful for literature review, analysis code in Codex, and Rosalind workflows once the model is enabled. It is still a U.S.-university-lab offer with a biosafety contact requirement, so it is not a general Edu upgrade.
How to use it#
Pick the right path first. If your university has no OpenAI Enterprise agreement, the PI or lab lead uses the academic-lab application. If the university already has an Enterprise agreement, request GPT-Rosalind through that university process instead. Ask your administrator if you are unsure.
Prepare before you open the form (from the help center):
- Institution, department, lab name, and the lab's official website.
- The PI or lab lead's institutional profile, role, and research focus.
- Intended use of GPT-Rosalind, who needs access, and their institutional email addresses and affiliations.
- Any existing workspace, intended access locations, and research data-handling requirements.
- Name, title, and contact information for a trained biosafety contact (EHS, Research Safety, biosecurity, or an equivalent institution-designated official).
Apply (PI or lab lead, no Enterprise path):
- Open the academic-lab application and sign in with the ChatGPT account tied to your institutional .edu email. Verify that email. Only U.S. accounts qualify.
- Provide institution, lab, role, and intended research use. Complete Persona identity verification and the required attestations, then submit. Persona verifying you does not mean you are approved.
- Watch your application status page. OpenAI also emails you if you are approved. Do not submit a duplicate while one review is pending.
After approval:
- Open the application status page for setup instructions.
- Before accepting, review seats covered, the complimentary end date, and any charges. A payment card is required during setup even though the seats are $0 for the promotional period.
- Accept the offer and the GPT-Rosalind access terms, finish workspace setup, add eligible lab members, and enable their GPT-Rosalind access in admin settings. Use the workspace linked to the approved application. Joining the workspace alone does not grant GPT-Rosalind.
Suggested prompt after access (ours, for literature or assay planning; not OpenAI's published demo):
I am planning a pilot assay to compare three candidate readouts for [disease or pathway]. Summarize the last five years of peer-reviewed work on each readout, note which papers used which cell or animal systems, flag where predicted vs measured values diverge, and propose a minimal paired experiment set that separates true biological signal from assay artifact. Cite sources and mark anything that needs wet-lab confirmation.
Good to know#
- No API. "The offer does not include API credits or API usage. Approval for this plan does not grant GPT-Rosalind access through the API."
- Card still required. "A payment card is required during setup."
- Sole owner. "You are the sole workspace owner - you cannot appoint additional owners or admins."
- Same email domain. Members need a verified institutional email on the same domain as the approved PI. Visiting researchers on another domain cannot be added.
- Zero Data Retention unavailable. "Zero Data Retention is not available under this offer." "Standard data retention applies by default."
- Cap of 30. More seats means contacting Support. A separate paid workspace does not extend the offer or move GPT-Rosalind approval.
- Not ChatGPT for Academic Researchers. Separate eligibility, application, workspace, and billing.
- Enterprise path is different. Labs under an existing university Enterprise agreement use that process, not the independent academic-lab form.
What to watch: how long trusted-access decisions take once applications pile up, and whether labs that outgrow 30 seats get a clear path into a university Enterprise agreement without losing Rosalind access.
