Some Grok Bot computers can't save their backup, so Update stops; don't Reset, staff warn
If Update keeps saying your computer's files aren't ready, your backup may be out of date. Keep working, copy key files off, and skip Reset.
If Update Grok Bot's Computer keeps saying "Your computer's files aren't ready" while your Bots work normally, your computer's backup may have stopped saving. Don't press Reset. Cursor staff member Colin said at 9:18 AM ET: "This is a known issue we're already tracking."
- Who: people whose computer works but can't save its backup copy. Staff gave no count.
- Symptom: Update refuses to run, over and over, with "files aren't ready."
- Risk: Reset rebuilds from that backup, and "since that backup is out of date, recent work could be lost."
- Status: tracked, no fix date.
What changed#
Until this morning, "files aren't ready" was explained as fallout from the Oct 14 outage, when frozen computers couldn't make a backup. That outage is resolved. At 6:40 AM ET one user reported the same message on iPhone and Mac since about 7:14 PM ET Oct 14, with "All bots open and reply normally."
Colin said this is "a different issue": "The computer itself is working fine, but for a while now it hasn't been able to save its backup copy. Update needs a fresh backup before it moves your computer, so it stops and leaves everything as it is." He added: "Your Bots, files and logins on the computer are untouched."
Why it matters#
The backup is what Update, Recover and Reset rebuild from, and this failure is quiet. Your Bots keep replying, so nothing tells you the safety net is out of date. Cursor's help center says Reset "Builds a new computer on the latest version from your last saved data." With a stale backup, that means rolling back.
What to do now#
- Keep using your computer. "You don't need this update to keep working, and retrying it won't help for now," Colin said.
- Don't use Reset Computer. "Please don't use Reset Computer," Colin said. Our note: we'd treat Recover the same way, since the help center says "Recover and Reset both rebuild from your last saved data." Staff haven't addressed Recover for this bug.
- Copy off anything you can't lose. Colin suggested "having one of your Bots send you a copy, or upload them somewhere you control." Try:
List the files on your computer that you created or changed in the last 3 days. Zip the ones I'd lose if the computer rolled back to an older backup and send the zip to me here. Don't delete or move anything.
- Contact support. The help center lists "Update keeps saying the computer's files aren't ready" as a reason to contact support instead of resetting.
Good to know#
- A forced update can drop recent changes. In a separate thread, Colin told one user their computer "was too overloaded to save its files first, so the normal update was refused and it then ran in forced mode, which doesn't wait for that save. Anything that changed after the computer's last successful save didn't carry over," which he called "the likely reason gh is logged out." He added that "Programs installed outside your home folder are also replaced on every update, while your home-folder data is kept."
- Unconfirmed: one user reports that a full disk made their computer reboot into an older snapshot twice, losing "about two days of work." No staff reply as of 10:40 AM ET, and staff haven't linked it to this bug or confirmed the rollback. Cursor's help center says "A disk warning is not data loss" and points to the Disk Saver Bot for cleanup.
- Colin didn't say what stops the backup or whether high memory plays a part.
What to watch#
A staff note in the forum thread that backups are saving again, and a reply on the full-disk rollback report.
