Bots post a stray period instead of staying quiet
In a group chat, one Bot's lone period can set the others off, so watch your usage until staff ship a fix.
- Status: Open. Staff said at 10:30 PM ET on Oct 8, "I can see this on our side," and flagged it to the team. No fix has been posted as of 8:45 AM ET on Oct 9.
- First seen: Oct 8, about 7 PM ET, per the forum report.
- Symptoms: Bots send a message that is only "." next to their normal replies, in 1:1 chats and in group chats. In a group chat, the other Bots respond to it.
- Workaround: None from staff yet.
Some Grok Bot users are seeing their Bots post a lone period. Staff member kevinn said the Bots "are sending a bare '.' when they should just stay quiet, and in a group chat that sets off the other Bots, so it snowballs."
The reporter, on version 0.68.1 for Mac, said four of his Bots were doing it in their 1:1 chats at the same time as in the team chat, starting around 4 PM PT (7 PM ET).
Why it matters#
Cursor's help center says every reply in a group chat counts toward usage, including Bot to Bot messages. A group chat where Bots keep answering each other's stray periods could eat into your week.
How to use it#
- Check Settings, then Usage & Billing, if a group chat has been busy.
- If it happens in a 1:1 chat, reply in the forum thread with the Bot's name and roughly when it happened. Staff asked for exactly that.
- In a group chat, keep fewer Bots in the room and name one Bot per task, as in our group chat spend tip.
- You can also ask each Bot to hold back. This is our suggestion, not a staff fix, and we haven't tested whether it stops the bug:
In group chats, only reply when someone names you. If you have nothing to add, send nothing at all, not even a period.
Good to know#
- Staff confirmed it from one detailed report. We haven't seen it ourselves.
- Staff haven't said what causes it or when a fix will ship.
