OpenAI donates Open Responses, its shared LLM API spec, to AAIF
OpenAI's Responses-style request format now has a neutral home at the Linux Foundation, so test any endpoint against it before you switch providers.
If your app is built on OpenAI's Responses API and you want the option to run another provider, check that provider against the Open Responses acceptance tests first. The spec now lives under neutral governance: OpenAI contributed it to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), part of the Linux Foundation, on Oct 22, per the Linux Foundation.
What changed#
Open Responses launched on Jan 15 as an open spec, per its changelog. The Linux Foundation describes it as "based on the OpenAI Responses API," so developers "can describe requests and outputs once and run them across model providers with minimal translation." A technical charter adopted Oct 21 hands oversight to a technical steering committee. The same announcement brought in Anthropic's Agent Skills, which is in today's digest.
Who supports it, from their own docs:
- Vercel: "AI Gateway supports the OpenResponses API specification," per its docs.
- Databricks: send requests "to the
/serving-endpoints/open-responsespath," per its docs. - AWS: "Amazon Bedrock has supported the Responses API since December 2025," per AWS. AWS names the Responses API there, not the acceptance tests.
Why it matters#
Our read: a shared request format makes a second provider, or a direct-key fallback, cheaper to keep ready. That matters more as gateways prepare for OpenAI's Nov 20 approval rule.
How to use it#
- Open the acceptance tests page.
- Enter the Base URL, Model and API Key, then select Run Browser Tests.
- Note which of the 10 browser tests fail; seven more are marked "CLI Only."
Good to know#
- Supported doesn't mean identical. Databricks says its version "works across providers but supports a focused feature set," and that "
previous_response_idand server-side conversation storage aren't supported," per its docs. - Anthropic is missing from the supporters list, per The New Stack, which notes Anthropic "defines its own Messages API."
- Provider-only features stay outside the portable core. The overview promises "room for provider-specific features when they don't generalize yet."
- OpenAI hasn't said whether its own API will track every future spec change.
- Watch next: Anthropic or Google endpoints passing the acceptance tests.
Last checked: Oct 23, 2026, 6:12 to 6:18 AM ET (the Linux Foundation release, four openresponses.org pages, Vercel and Databricks docs, the AWS blog and The New Stack). What changed: first published Oct 23; no updates since.
Steps
- Open the Open Responses acceptance tests page at openresponses.org.
- Enter the endpoint's Base URL, Model and API Key, then select Run Browser Tests.
- Read which of the 10 browser tests pass; 7 more are marked CLI Only.
- Treat any failure as code you'd have to adapt before moving that workload (our suggestion).
