Claude Code 2.1.296 adds longer 529 backoff and one model for workflows

Run claude update to get 2.1.296, released Oct 9 at 3:28 PM ET. It lets you wait out overloads longer, pin every workflow agent to one model, and closes a Bash auto-approval gap.

What changed#

• CLAUDE_CODE_OVERLOADED_RETRY_MAX_DELAY_MS sets a longer maximum backoff for 529 overloaded retries.
• CLAUDE_CODE_WORKFLOW_SUBAGENT_MODEL runs every workflow agent on one model while other subagents keep theirs.
• Subagents get autoCompactWindow in frontmatter, so they can compact earlier than the main conversation.
• The Read tool gets allow_large to read a big text file in one call.
• Security fix: some commands that assign BASH_ARGV0 and then use it were auto-approved. They now prompt.
• Edit fix: Edit and NotebookEdit replaced every non-ASCII character in non-UTF-8 files (Windows-1252, Shift-JIS, GBK). Such edits are now refused.
• /cost now prices Sonnet 5.5 cache reads at $0.10 per million tokens.

Why it matters#

Long unattended runs fail on overloads, and workflow fan-outs can burn expensive tokens. Both now have a direct setting.

How to use it#

1. claude update, then claude --version should print 2.1.296.
2. For overnight jobs, export a larger CLAUDE_CODE_OVERLOADED_RETRY_MAX_DELAY_MS (milliseconds) before starting.
3. To keep workflow fan-outs cheap, export CLAUDE_CODE_WORKFLOW_SUBAGENT_MODEL=haiku (or another model).
4. If you edit legacy-encoded files, convert them to UTF-8 first; Edit now refuses them.

Run this workflow over every file in src/. Keep each agent's summary under 100 words and list files you could not read.

Good to know#

• An open issue (one reporter) says custom subagent model: frontmatter was ignored in some versions (the issue gives 2.1.277 to 2.1.290 in its title and 2.1.283 to 2.1.290 in its body), so subagents ran on the parent's Opus model. Check your own transcripts' message.model field if usage looks high. Anthropic has not confirmed it.
• The changelog does not give a default value for the new retry delay.
