You can now text your ChatGPT dot over iMessage or RCS
Pro users in the US can start handing their always-on dot tasks by text, and it texts back with updates on its own.
Your dot, ChatGPT's always-on agent, now answers texts. Per @ChatGPT, you can give it "a task to take off your plate or something to keep an eye on, using text, photos, or even voice notes", and "It will text you proactively with relevant updates."
What changed#
@ChatGPT posted it at 1:30 PM ET Wednesday, and @OpenAI reposted it. Per the release notes, texting "shares the same memory and plugins as your dot in the ChatGPT app, so context carries over".
Availability wording differs by page. @ChatGPT says "Rolling out now as a preview for Pro users in the US." The release notes say it "is starting to roll out in beta to Pro users in the U.S." The help article says it "is available in beta to a limited number of Pro users in the US" and "isn't supported in Business or Enterprise workspaces".
Why it matters#
Our read: a dot no longer waits for you to open ChatGPT; handoffs can live in the thread you already check. Prior: ChatGPT dots.
How to use it#
Per OpenAI's help article:
- "Open your dot's profile and select Texting."
- "Enter your phone number and select Send confirmation text."
- "Enter the code you receive and select Verify phone number."
Limited Pro beta (untried here). Prompt (ours, untested):
Keep an eye on my inbox for anything from the Acme renewal thread. If a reply comes in, text me a two-line summary and the one decision I need to make. Otherwise, text me nothing until Friday at 4 PM, then send a one-line status.
Good to know#
- Not end-to-end encrypted: because Linq, a third-party provider, "processes these messages on the way to OpenAI, the conversation is not end-to-end encrypted between you and your dot, even when you use iMessage or RCS", per the help article.
- "SMS isn't supported", and "Your dot can't participate in group texts", per the help article.
- It "doesn't give your dot or OpenAI access to your other text conversations", per the release notes.
- "If you don't see Texting in your dot's profile, texting isn't available for your account yet." "Message and data rates may apply." (help).
