ChatGPT Chrome tabs: Chat reads them, Work controls them

Install the extension, then ask Chat to compare open tabs or let Work fill forms, send messages, and group the pile.

Install the ChatGPT Chrome extension, then ask Chat to read across tabs you already have open, or switch to Work when you want it to control those tabs (forms, messages, downloads, tab groups). The in-browser sidebar now keeps your full ChatGPT history beside the page.

What changed#

On Oct 15 at 4:02 PM ET, @ChatGPT said OpenAI is bringing computer use to anyone who uses Chrome. In Chat, ChatGPT can look across open tabs and gather info. In Work, it can control Chrome tabs to send messages, fill out forms, download files, and organize or group open tabs. A follow-up says ChatGPT inside a Chrome tab got a major upgrade: full history in the browser, and Chat or Work side by side with the site you are on.

Before: the extension and sidebar already helped while browsing. Sept 11 Help notes already listed Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi for tab mentions and browser control. After: the Oct 15 thread centers tab reading in Chat, tab control in Work, and a fuller in-tab experience. ChatGPT Help release notes still lead with GPT-Live-1.1, Rosalind, and Sites, with no dedicated dated entry for this upgrade. Primary source is the @ChatGPT thread.

Why it matters#

Our read: shopping and research need less tab switching when Chat can compare what you already opened. Work users can hand off multi-step browser tasks without leaving Chrome. Free and Go can install the extension (@ChatGPT: available for all plans), but tab control starts from a Work or Codex chat, and Work rolled out to paid plans except Free and Go (July 13 Help notes). OpenAI has not said which plans get tab control in Chrome.

How to use it#

  1. Update the ChatGPT desktop app, then open Settings > Computer Use.
  2. Select Chrome, install the extension from the Chrome Web Store, and confirm the browser shows Manage.
  3. For side chat: open a page, click ChatGPT in the toolbar (macOS: Cmd+Shift+.), and ask about the page or your open tabs.
  4. For browser control (per OpenAI's Learn docs): start a Work or Codex chat, @-mention Chrome, and give a task. Review each site-permission prompt before allowing.

Official example prompt from @ChatGPT:

Prompt
Compare the three couches I have open by dimensions, material, delivery time, and return policy.

Good to know#

  • Chat vs Work. Chat reads across tabs. Work controls them (messages, forms, downloads, grouping).
  • Plans. Extension: all ChatGPT plans. Work features need Work access. July 13 Help notes rolled Work to paid plans excluding Free and Go.
  • Other Chromium browsers. This Oct 15 thread is Chrome-first. Edge/Brave/Opera/Vivaldi support was already in Sept 11 Help notes and Learn docs. Engadget restates Edge/Brave/Opera as prior help-doc support, not a claim unique to this post.
  • Permissions. By default ChatGPT asks before each new website. Allow-for-all-sites and browser-history access are marked higher risk in Learn docs. Treat page content as untrusted.
  • Watch next: a dated Help Center entry, and clearer Free/Go limits on tab reading vs Work control.
