GPT-5.5 leaves ChatGPT, Work and Codex on Oct 14

Saved settings, scheduled tasks and scripts that pick gpt-5.5 need a new model in the next two days.

Check anything that selects gpt-5.5 today. On Oct 14, 2026, GPT-5.5 retires from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on every plan. The API is not affected.

What changed#

OpenAI's Codex changelog: "On October 14, 2026, GPT-5.5 will retire from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex on all plans."

How to use it#

Search your Codex config: rg -n "gpt-5.5" ~/.codex .codex.
Replace it with an available replacement for your plan and client, as OpenAI's notice advises.
Open ChatGPT's Scheduled page and edit tasks pinned to GPT-5.5.
Admins: update workspace defaults and managed configs.

Find every place in this repo and in ~/.codex that selects gpt-5.5 and list file, line and a suggested replacement.

Good to know#

API-key Codex sessions are not covered by this retirement.
OpenAI names workspace defaults, custom agents, scheduled tasks and scripts as things to update.
