Cursor retires Cmd+K inline edit; Agent takes over
Cursor staff say Cmd+K, including terminal command generation, was retired today, so quick edits and shell commands now go through Agent.
Cmd+K in Cursor no longer writes code or shell commands for you. Press Cmd+I to open Agent instead, or select code (or terminal output) and press Cmd+L to send it to Agent.
What changed#
On Monday a user reported that pressing Cmd+K in the integrated terminal now shows a box that says "Cmd+K Has Been Retired. Select code and press Cmd+L to add it to Agent." Cursor staff member Colin answered at 12:32 PM ET: "this is expected. Cmd+K, including generating commands in the terminal, was retired today, so instead of a command you now get that message. Updating won't bring it back."
The Agent help page says: "Cmd + K used to open inline edit, which has been replaced by this workflow." Selecting code and pressing Cmd+L or Cmd+K opens Agent "with those lines referenced in the input." The old inline-edit docs URL redirects there. The changelog has no entry yet; newest post is Oct 16.
Why it matters#
Anyone who used Cmd+K for quick edits or shell commands has lost that shortcut. The reporter said Agent "feels much…heavier" and that the old way "returned commands in a second or less."
How to use it#
- For a shell command, press Cmd+I (Ctrl+I on Windows and Linux) and describe it. Colin says Agent "will write the command and can run it in a terminal for you."
- To work from something already in your terminal, select that output and press Cmd+L first.
- For a code edit, select the lines and press Cmd+L (Cmd+K now does the same on Mac).
Cursor IDE UI was not on the writer box, so these steps and the starter prompt were not hands-on verified (staff forum and help docs only).
A starter request (ours, untested):
Give me one shell command that [does what you want] in my current shell. Show the command only, with no explanation, and don't run it until I say so.
Good to know#
- Updating Cursor won't bring Cmd+K back, per staff.
- The message box tells you to "Select code" even in the terminal. Colin says that wording "is written for the editor, which is why it reads oddly in the terminal."
- No changelog or X post from Cursor yet, so we don't know if any plan or setting keeps the old behavior.
What to watch#
A changelog entry explaining the change, and whether Cursor adds a faster command mode to Agent for people who miss Cmd+K.
