Claude Enterprise gets unified chat and Cowork, on by default Nov 16

Enterprise owners have until November 16 to pick Enable now or Keep disabled before Anthropic turns the merged chat and Cowork experience on.

If you run a Claude Enterprise organization, you can now merge chat and Cowork for your members, and you have a decision to make before November 16. Anthropic's admin guide says: "It's off by default in existing organizations and turns on by default on November 16, 2026."

What changed#

Anthropic announced on Friday: "The same unified Claude experience is now generally available for Claude Enterprise plans." Pro and Max got it first; per the same post, "Chat and Cowork first came together for Pro and Max plans in September."

BeforeAfter (when turned on)
Starting workMembers pick chat or CoworkEvery conversation starts as a chat
Agentic workCowork, set up separatelySame conversation, in a cloud virtual machine Anthropic manages
Usage reportsChat, CoworkChat and Cowork unified (new line)

Per the guide: "Each conversation that needs one gets its own virtual machine, managed by Anthropic."

Why it matters#

Our read: doing nothing is a choice, because the switch flips on November 16 unless you set it. Cost is the other reason to look now. Anthropic's post says: "Depending on the task, agentic work can use more tokens than a quick chat." The new Efficient mode is the lever: "When on, org members can use only Sonnet and Haiku models in the new unified Claude experience, and new sessions start on Claude Sonnet 5.5 at low effort." (guide)

How to use it#

  1. As an Owner or Primary Owner, open Organization settings > Capabilities and find Chat and Cowork unified. Anthropic's guide says you'll see "Will be automatically enabled on November 16, 2026." and can pick Enable now or Keep disabled.
  2. Confirm Chat and Cloud code execution and file creation are on. Per the same guide: "If Chat or Cloud code execution and file creation is off, there's no notice and nothing turns on."
  3. To pilot: "Before you turn it on, move anyone who shouldn't have it to a custom role with Chat and Cowork unified turned off."
  4. To cap model costs, turn on Efficient mode on the Models page, for the whole org or per custom role.
  5. Paste the guide into Claude with this prompt:
I'm a Claude Enterprise Owner. Using only the admin guide I paste below, build a checklist for deciding before November 16, 2026 whether to choose Enable now or Keep disabled for Chat and Cowork unified. List every setting the guide says applies, its default, and which team should review it. Flag anything about ZDR, HIPAA, CMEK, memory, scheduled tasks, and usage reports. Don't change any settings. (ours, untested)

Good to know#

  • Your earlier choice sticks. "If the setting was already turned on or off, that choice stays." (guide)
  • Old memory can go. "After moving to the new experience, the memory will be moved to a new memory system and the old memory may be deleted 14 days later, or sooner if it’s past the data retention period." (guide)
  • Scheduled tasks outlive their chat. "These keep running after that conversation is deleted." (guide)
  • Reports move. Include the new Chat and Cowork unified line when you add up spend, tokens, or messages for Chat and Cowork (guide).
  • ZDR wording differs. The guide says: "The new unified Claude experience isn't available to organizations with zero data retention, the HIPAA-ready configuration, or customer-managed encryption keys." The post says: "Organizations that use zero data retention for Claude Code, a HIPAA-ready configuration, or customer-managed encryption keys stay on their current configuration." Our read: if you have any ZDR setup, ask your account team which applies.

What to watch#

  • November 16, 2026. Anthropic's post says existing Enterprise customers "will receive an email about the rollout for your organization."
  • HIPAA and CMEK timing, per the guide: "HIPAA support is expected after general availability; CMEK support is planned for a later release."

Steps

  1. Sign in to Claude as an Owner or Primary Owner and go to Organization settings > Capabilities.
  2. Under Chat and Cowork unified, choose Enable now or Keep disabled (Anthropic's guide says it turns on by default on November 16, 2026 if you haven't changed it).
  3. Make sure Chat and Cloud code execution and file creation are on; the guide says both are required.
  4. To pilot, per Anthropic's guide, move members who shouldn't have it yet to a custom role with Chat and Cowork unified turned off before turning it on.
  5. Optional: turn on Efficient mode on the Models page; the guide says it limits the unified experience to Sonnet and Haiku models.
